Aquaculture Technologies for Invertebrates

چکیده
Alterations to the structure of the fisheries industry have become necessary in Japan due to low levels of capture fisheries production, an aging population, environmental concerns, and increased worldwide demand for marine food products. In accordance with these developments, the Fisheries Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, established the new Basic Plan for Fisheries in 2007. Under this plan, measures to realize the improvement of food self-sufficiency and global competitiveness of the industry are given priority, such as the promotion of stock management in Japan’s exclusive economic zone and on the high seas, development of ecosystem-based sustainable aquaculture, establishment of new distribution systems, promotion of the export of marine products to expanding international markets, and utilization of multiple functions of fisheries communities. Concerning aquaculture technology, the plan calls for the promotion of sustainable production based on the responsible use of aquaculture grounds and development of multiaquaculture technology employing low environmental-loading feed. Development of large-scale aquaculture systems and offshore aquaculture technology should also be important in achieving more efficient usage of sea areas. Innovation of alternative protein sources for feed, that is, plants or agricultural waste products, is urgently required to deal with the shortage of fish meal. The Fisheries Research Agency (FRA) has recently initiated projects on blue-fin tuna and kanpachi (amber jack) aquaculture in accordance with these research schemes. In this paper, current aquaculture research in the FRA was introduced.

Review of the RNA Interference Pathway in Molluscs Including Some Possibilities for Use in Bivalves in Aquaculture
Generalised reviews of RNA interference (RNAi) in invertebrates, and for use in aquaculture, have taken for granted that RNAi pathways operate in molluscs, but inspection of such reviews show little specific evidence of such activity in molluscs. This review was to understand what specific research had been conducted on RNAi in molluscs, particularly with regard to aquaculture. There were quest...
متن کاملNutritional Value and Uses of Microalgae in Aquaculture
Microalgae play indeed a crucial nutritional role with regard to marine animals in the open sea, and consequently in aquaculture. Most marine invertebrates depend on microalgae for their whole life cycle, so commercial and experimental mollusc or fish hatcheries have included a microalga production system in parallel to their animal production itself. Microalgae are utilized as live feed for al...
متن کاملEffects of host migration, diversity and aquaculture on sea lice threats to Pacific salmon populations.
Animal migrations can affect disease dynamics. One consequence of migration common to marine fish and invertebrates is migratory allopatry-a period of spatial separation between adult and juvenile hosts, which is caused by host migration and which prevents parasite transmission from adult to juvenile hosts. We studied this characteristic for sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemens...
متن کاملA review of the status and development requirements for cage Aquaculture in Iran and the world
In recent years, cage aquaculture has been introduced as modern technology in the world. Although the use of cages for fish’s holding and transporting for short periods can return two centuries ago in Asian, commercial cage aquaculture was pioneered in Norway in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, due to population growth, climate change and more attention to the productivity of water use in the aquacu...
متن کاملFinfish and aquatic invertebrate pathology resources for now and the future.
Utilization of finfish and aquatic invertebrates in biomedical research and as environmental sentinels has grown dramatically in recent decades. Likewise the aquaculture of finfish and invertebrates has expanded rapidly worldwide as populations of some aquatic food species and threatened or endangered aquatic species have plummeted due to overharvesting or habitat degradation. This increasing i...
